1998 CLUB NATIONALS – BETTING POOL RESULTS

Well, I had to make an executive decision. And yes, there were repercussions. Send all complaints to my main bookie, Sal. He'll be sure to quickly settle any problems you may have.

The decision I had to make was thus: It was not officially listed in the post whether picking the winner in the finals would give you any points. Should I award points to bettors* who picked the winner?

My answer: Yes. No self-respecting pool would disregard the winner. And since this is MY pool, I can change it at will, as long as I am acting in GOOD FAITH.

Solution: Award 8 points for picking the winner. This is the same amount as picking the qualifiers for finals.

The rundown was thus, as follows:

Pick Winner, Pool Play = 4pts
Pick Correct Score, Pool = 6pts
Pick Qualifier, Semis = 5 pts
Pick Correct Score Semis = 10 pts
Pick Qualifier Finals = 8 pts
Pick Correct Score, Finals = 12 pts
Pick Winner, Finals = 8 pts

Yes, this is all a little screwy. It makes sense somehow though.

* No money involved of course.

THE FINAL TALLY
So do winners pick winners? Do Nationals players pick winners? Did you pick winners?

Answer is yes to the first two.

There was a tie at the top. Tournament Director Butch Brown and myself both finished at 163. And we didn't even cheat. My key was picking 4 correct scores in pool play (Ring vs Jam (!), Godiva v Ozone, Refugees v Red Tide, Verge v Homebrood) and SEVEN of the eight semifinalists (my only miss was picking the Philly Peppers to qualify). Butch picked 20 pool play games correct, 5 semifinalists and both winners. If he had made a wiser pick than giving props to his homeys Miami in the semis, maybe he coulda won!

BUT DON'T STOP READING!!

I ain't going to keep the t-shirt. Butch ain't getting shit. Already got one. So I have decided to give the shirt to the highest NON-NATIONALS-PLAYER/PARTICIPATOR.

Boy, you guys suck. Butch and I finished first, sure, but Jim Parinella not only won Nationals, he came in second in the first annual betting pool! Congrats Jim! Now can we please have some officials check for point shaving??

Big Jim tallied 20 correct pool winners, 5 correct semifinalists, and 2 winners (duh, DoG and Godiva). You want to know, right? He had DoG beat Jam in the finals by 1. Jim's final tally was 157.

He's not the only Finals player to pick some games. Pete Rose, you should have played Ultimate!!

Hollywood Husak placed some bets of his own. Unfortunately for Greg, he didn't have the heart to pick the finals winners at all!! But he did pick his team, the Condors, to be in the finals with DoG. Bonus points there. "The Forearm Shiver" Husak finished at 149.

So who's next? Who finished a measly 5th?? What commoner out there finished closest to all these studly Nationals veterans??

With some controversy, the prize goes to Pillot.arch@worldnet.att.net. Yes, she/he squeaked by Martin Saxer by picking both winners DoG and Godiva, while Martin went "with a heavy bias to the West Coast" and paid for it. Pillot.arch@worldnet.att.net also benefited from my personal game observations. While the Houndz-WSL match was incorrectly put down as a 15–10 WSL victory, I happen to know better. The final was 17–9 and Pillot.arch@worldnet.att.net got it right!

How did he/she do it? Well, next to being a savvy appraiser of Nationals teams like myself, Butch, Jim and Greg, there's good ol' beginners luck (or in this case, old-timers's luck)

Writes Pillot.arch@worldnet.att.net "I haven't played in years. I don't know crap about most of these teams so the picks really are guesses. Thanks for the distraction while I'm supposed to be working."

Pillot.arch@worldnet.att.net finished at 146, safely ahead of Martin's 135. Third place in the commoner pool went to Beth Thomas with 129.

There you have it from a worthy play-along game. Stay tuned next year, or better yet College Nationals.

Pillot.arch@worldnet.att.net please send me your address. If you have a t-shirt already, let me know and I'll send it to Martin. Please pick dark green or light blue.
