APRIL FOOLS FEST – SHORT OPEN WRITEUP

Scattered. Smothered. Covered. Diced. Chunked.

No, the five ways you can get your hash browns at Waffle House don't describe the play at Fools Fest the weekend of April 3, 4,and 5. They are referring to the state of my gray matter after three days of foolish indulgence.

Like all good tournaments, Fools Fests provides ample opportunity for letting oneself partake in any number of inhibitants. In particular I was participating with the team from New York, We Smoke Weed. The Westchester area is particularly known for its Echinacea crops, a local weed that has bettered humanity and stopped sickness for thousands of years.

The weed-enhanced New Yorkers managed to play some very good Ultimate over the course of events, emerging unscathed from initial pool play and earning a crucial victory over the Flying Dwarves on Saturday, demoting last year's finalists to the B pool and setting up Weed with a Boston College Re-union team on Sunday. A lucky victory over the Spoonheads propelled Weed to a match with Mr. Yuk, a Carnegie-Mellon/Pittsburgh Re-union team featuring notable Boston, Seattle and Raleigh-Durham talent.

Mr. Yuk smoked the Weed team, 13—something, earning them a trip to the A finals against the team Formerly Known As. FKA was last fka Force Majeure, as well as five other names from past Fools tournaments. The Boston/Connecticut combo had earned a tough victory over the deflated Peggy Cronin's Lunar Ultimate who again blew an early lead en route to a semifinals loss.

Mr Yuk refused to lose in the finals. They never showed signs of fear and played relaxed and highly competitive Ultimate throughout. Taking an early lead into halftime, the Yuksters withstood a FKA resurgence and finished the game in grand fashion. Mike "Chuckie" Juster, celebrating his ____ birthday, stroked a picture-perfect 70-yard forehand to a streaking Mark Licata who rose up in the endzone to make a beautiful snag over a tough FKA defender to win, 17—10.
