For Immediate Release The 1999 Jockey UPA College Ultimate Championships kicked off today under fair skies and light breezes. The afternoon squall spared Boulder and the play flourished under the sun. In the Men's Division, Colorado University faced-off against old Regional rival Carleton College in the most anticipated match of the day. Colorado, seeded 5th overall, hoped to unseat 4th seed Carleton, and earn a buy into the quarterfinals en route towards an elusive National Championship. But the senior-laden team from northern Minnesota held their ground and played a magnificent game, sending a core of 6' 4'' players into the endzone to sky for long-thrown discs. Carleton won 15 - 10. But the tournament isn't over for talented Colorado. They will play a weaker team in pre-quarters tomorrow and advance to quarterfinals to face North Carolina State, whom they have not met this year. The game starts at 1:30. NC. State is beatable; a win here puts C.U. into semis, which start at 4:00 at the Pleasantview Soccer Complex. The top sixteen college men's teams and twelve women's from the U.S. and Canada came to compete for the title. In the Men's division final, three-time defending champions University of CaliforniaSanta Barbara, undefeated at Nationals since 1996, fell to North Carolina State in overtime 1614. "We've been looking forward to meeting this team in the finals all season." spoke N.C. State's co-captain Brian Snyder. N.C. State, seeded third overall, had to defeat second seed Brown University and fifth seeded home team Colorado University to reach the finals and top seed UCSB. Jinx Proves Destined to Win N.C. State won the National Collegiate Ultimate Frisbee Championship this weekend, defeating University of CaliforniaSanta Barbara in the finals 1614. It was no small feat for N.C. State. Santa Barbara had been undefeated in three straight years of Nationals competition before losing their final game of the season. N.C. State's 'Jinx' team was led by a core of seniors who have been practicing three days a week in preparation for the Championship tournament. Seniors Chris Hinkle, Brian Snyder, Kris Bass and Kevin Kusy provided the experience and leadership for the team. "We've been looking forward to meeting this team in the finals all season," spoke Snyder about Santa Barbara. State combined a fearless offense with a tenacious defense, stopping Santa Barbara's patented deep game while connecting on long throws of their own. Jinx opened up a 127 lead before Santa Barbara fought back to tie at 14s. At that point, Snyder sent a 70-yard backhand to Bass who made a great catch in the endzone to give N.C. State the lead for good. A turnover on the next point gave Jinx a chance to put the game away, and they did on a risky Hinkle to Kusy throw.
The first Press Release was written for local Colorado papers and the Colorado student paper. I think more than a few papers in the area came out to cover the tournament. The second press release was sent out to a list of nationwide media outlets that then-UPA Vice President Michael Guuitz put together. The third was a small bit I wrote and sent to papers in the RaleighDurham area.
