1999 COLLEGIATE PRESEASON POLL

It's never been easy to figure out the status of Ultimate teams. But recently with the expansion of major Collegiate tournaments like the President's Cup, Stanford Invite, College Easterns and the Yale Cup, prognasticators have been able to match predictions with actual teams. So why not have an AP poll?

So here you have it. The first ever UPA-voted press poll. Fanning out across the nation and making sure to keep abreast on rec.sport.disc and rumors from the different regions, three dedicated College Ultimate experts have offered their forecast for the season to come.

Kate Bergeron-Gull is the National Collegiate Director and is always in the know about teams and events, especially on the West Coast.

Charles Kerr is the proponent behind the Callahan Rules and Nortel Sponsorship of tournaments. He keeps tabs on the state of the scene around the country but calls Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, home.

And myself, with roots in the midwest and a base in the Northeast, providing the words and research to make it all come together.

Bergeron-Gull and Kerr know their College Ultimate. Both of them ranked the men's top 5 almost identically. You can be sure that this is a knowledgeable preseason poll on the top teams in college Ultimate today.

This was long, long overdue: an actual attempt (with proven results) at keeping tabs on the college division. I don't think a reliable pre-season Poll was done before or after this one, which came out in the UPA Newsletter one month before College Nationals. Michael Guuitz called me with the idea. I started calling captains across the country to find out who everyone thought would be tops this year. Then I talked to Charles and Kate and got them to send me their 'top ten' lists which were weighted and tallied equally. I wrote 3-4 sentences for each team to go along with the poll.
